How time flies! Another year gone by. Looking back in order to move forward
by Angela Frawley
It’s January again! Time to look back and take stock before moving forward and planning the year ahead. Last year definitely had its ups and downs, from some exciting projects to some challenging experiences. I am expecting great changes in 2025.
The LATAM market
I have spent most of my professional life translating within the European and North American Regulatory Affairs context. Last year I was very excited to work on a large project involving the translation of 55 SmPCs (Summary of Product Characteristics) from Spanish/French into UK English. This project required meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding not only of the languages involved but also of the regulatory context. It is interesting to observe how the same language is used differently depending on the country. The word for “tablets” in English, to use a simple example, might be “Comprimidos”, “Tabletas” or “Pastillas” in Spanish.
Non-payment and legal action
On the flip side, one of the biggest challenges facing small companies and freelancers is when a company fails to meet its payment obligations. It is so disheartening. After working extremely hard to translate a highly technical Veterinary textbook, I am still chasing payment one year later. Learning how to file a “procedimiento monitorio”in Spain was fun and like everything, easy once you know how. Overall, the situation has been stressful and an unnecessary waste of time and energy.
Goodbye to colleagues and friends
Last year also brought some bittersweet farewells. Several colleagues and friends have left Barcelona—and, in some cases, the translation profession itself. While I was very sad to say goodbye, I am inspired by their courage to embrace change and look forward to seeing what the future has in store for them. I wonder if I will be next.
So, looking forward to 2025
Continuing with my specialisations: medical research, pharmacovigilance and regulatory affairs
These translations challenge me, push me to stay informed about medical advancements, and remind me of the tangible impact our work has on patient safety and healthcare progress.
Ongoing professional development
Professional growth is important, so I am looking at some options for CPD (Continuing Professional Development) for 2025. Professional associations like MET (Mediterranean Editors and Translators) and APTIC (the Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters of Catalonia) are amazing. I am forever grateful for their excellent work and the sense of community they foster among translators.
Slow progress with Farsi
Learning the language of the ancient Persians is slow. Mastering a new script not only cultivates open-minded engagement with a rich culture, but also acts as a powerful mental exercise, sharpening focus and boosting cognitive agility. Writing in Farsi feels strangely therapeutic—like a meditative escape. Each small step in this journey feels as though I am unlocking a door to a world far beyond the confines of Europe-centric perspectives.
